At the Colorado Women's Art Center & Museum, we're on a mission to elevate, encourage and exhibit Colorado Women Visual Artists.
Keep Life Interesting. That’s the motto Carrie MaKenna, Founder and President, inherited from her mother and three generations of Colorado artists and art collectors in her family.
The Colorado Women’s Art Museum (CWAM) was established from MaKenna’s lifetime of experience and as a Colorado art maker, a legacy leading to the creation of this Museum for the state’s talented women visual artists.
Historically and today, accomplished women artists have lacked adequate opportunities for exhibitions through traditional galleries and museums. We're on a mission to change that.
The love of art is literally in our blood. MaKenna’s mother Ruth Brunskill Greiner was an artist, art collector and dedicated promoter of the arts. When Ruth received a substantial inheritance from her uncle in 1992, she and her husband Rod, established our 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Denver.
Ruth served as a docent at the Denver Art Museum, managed Tanner’s Indian Art Gallery in Applewood for 15 years, and volunteered and hosted artist receptions in her home throughout the 20 years of the Annual Rotary Club of Denver Artists of America events.
Under Ruth’s direction, the nonprofit organization went on to contribute to the Colorado Museum of Contemporary Art, the Denver Art Museum Hamilton Building and the Kirkland Museum among many other arts related projects locally and nationally.

Deborah Deal-Blackwell, APR is a businesswoman with diverse experience.
After college, she started her career at the NBC network affiliate WESH-TV in Orlando, Florida. From there she went on to work for several advertising / public relations agencies, including her own.
While active in her community on numerous boards of directors she specialized in commercial and residential real estate, and the travel/hotel industry.
Her career took a nonprofit turn when she became president/executive director of Angel Flight Southeast. At AFSE she tripled the revenue for this 501(c)(3), oversaw 1,293 volunteer pilots and chapters in the southeast United States.
Commercialization of technical innovations became her next passion when she teamed with her brother John (Grizz) Deal and created several companies that are spinouts from the U.S. National Laboratory system including one for nuclear power. Deborah was the first to bring the concept of a commercial small, modular, nuclear power reactor (SMR) before the U.S. Congress and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for regulation.
Today, she is still a partner at IX Power with her brother, where they are bringing water treatment innovations to the industries of oil & gas, mining, manufacturing, and environmental clean-up.
Deborah is a mixed-media and textile artist, and is the president of the Women’s Caucus for Art Colorado Chapter for 2024 and 2025.
