At the Colorado Women's Art Center & Museum, we're on a mission to elevate, encourage and exhibit Colorado Women Visual Artists.
Keep Life Interesting. That’s the motto Carrie MaKenna, Founder and President, inherited from her mother and three generations of Colorado artists and art collectors in her family.
The Colorado Women’s Art Museum (CWAM) was established from MaKenna’s lifetime of experience and as a Colorado art maker, a legacy leading to the creation of this Museum for the state’s talented women visual artists.
Historically and today, accomplished women artists have lacked adequate opportunities for exhibitions through traditional galleries and museums. We're on a mission to change that.
The love of art is literally in our blood. MaKenna’s mother Ruth Brunskill Greiner was an artist, art collector and dedicated promoter of the arts. When Ruth received a substantial inheritance from her uncle in 1992, she and her husband Rod, established our 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Denver.
Ruth served as a docent at the Denver Art Museum, managed Tanner’s Indian Art Gallery in Applewood for 15 years, and volunteered and hosted artist receptions in her home throughout the 20 years of the Annual Rotary Club of Denver Artists of America events.
Under Ruth’s direction, the nonprofit organization went on to contribute to the Colorado Museum of Contemporary Art, the Denver Art Museum Hamilton Building and the Kirkland Museum among many other arts related projects locally and nationally.

CLARINE COMMINS
Clarine was born in Brooklyn, NY, raised on Long Island, NY, and later moved with her family to Los Angeles, CA in the early 80's and is currently living in Englewood, CO.
After retiring from 15 years as brand manager for a successful celebrity brand in Los Angeles, and prior 20+ years as co-owner and designer/manufacturer of women's accessories and clothing, Clarine dedicate her time to exploring and furthering her artistic voice as a fiber artist. As she was told: "don't just retire out of something, retire into something".
Fiber arts were a strong presence in her childhood home--her mother taught her to knit, and to appreciate and understand the functionality, versatility and beauty of different fibers. Her father, an Architect, instilled in her the importance of shape and form. Both taught her to be rebellious and curious. These themes are ever-present in her work.
Her knitting evolved into felting sustainable and functional art vessels and wool felted wall hangings Her techniques expanded to wet felting, fulling and dry felting.
She has been recognized at several art shows and venues and continues to participate in philanthropic artistic events.

Lynn is a Denver abstract and nonobjective artist who has been painting in oils, acrylics, and mixed media for over 20 years. She is a graduate of the University of Colorado, and her fields of study have included mathematics, philosophy, and science which have inspired her love of space, geometry, and time, revealed in
many of her works.
She previously worked in the field of philanthropy for 12 years, as both a Program Officer for two foundations, and the Executive Director of a small national foundation. Other interests took her into educational research and working with many nonprofit organizations for over
30 years.
Art history is one of her passions, and too often little value is placed on women’s art in museums and in galleries, both locally and internationally. Being a board member for the Colorado Women’s Center and Art Museum is both an honor and an opportunity for her to help correct this oversight and change the misperception that women’s art is somehow less-than.

LOIS R. LUPICA
For nearly three decades, artist Lois R. Lupica was a professor of law first and a painter second. But seven years ago, the law professor from the University of Maine moved to Colorado part-time during sabbaticals and summers and rediscovered her passion for encaustic and cold wax painting. Five years ago, she made Colorado her full-time home. Her "day job" is heading up a Legal Innovation Lab where she builds tools to help people who can't afford lawyers.
Lois' cold wax paintings are expressions of light emerging from the darkness, with imagery subsumed by subtle tones and texture. Her encaustic work reflects bold color, tonal contrast, relief patterns, and are reflective of a strong physical interaction with materials. Blowtorches, heat guns, scrapers and brushes are used as tools to both add and subtract pigmented wax. Lupica’s fine art pieces are both communicative and aesthetic. She believes being surrounded by beautiful and provocative art makes life better.
Lois is a member of the Sync Gallery in Denver's Art District on Santa Fe. Her paintings have been in numerous juried shows, including a solo show at the Silverthorne Performing Arts Center, Art on the Green, D'Art Galley, Apis Opis at NKollective, the ASLD Summer Art Market and the Encaustic Art Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work is featured in numerous private collections, businesses and homes across the country. When she's not painting, she and her husband enjoy skiing, biking, and traveling around the world. Lois is also a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu and gives great dinner parties, upkeep, CRM upkeep, and event production.

For a variety of personal reasons, I have spent my lifetime trying to find my voice. Becoming a self-taught artist gave me a way to express experiences that I did not have the words to communicate. As I have connected deeply with other female artists, I have found that many of us use art to disclose our deepest selves. In a world that does not always value the female experience or at times offers us oppression, art is a meaningful method of sharing our truths.
But women’s art is not as highly valued as men’s, and we struggle in this arena to find recognition or even be seen. It is important to find ways to support each other and highlight the valuable contributions of female artists.
