At the Colorado Women's Art Center & Museum, we're on a mission to elevate, encourage and exhibit Colorado Women Visual Artists.
Keep Life Interesting. That’s the motto Carrie MaKenna, Founder and President, inherited from her mother and three generations of Colorado artists and art collectors in her family.
The Colorado Women’s Art Museum (CWAM) was established from MaKenna’s lifetime of experience and as a Colorado art maker, a legacy leading to the creation of this Museum for the state’s talented women visual artists.
Historically and today, accomplished women artists have lacked adequate opportunities for exhibitions through traditional galleries and museums. We're on a mission to change that.
The love of art is literally in our blood. MaKenna’s mother Ruth Brunskill Greiner was an artist, art collector and dedicated promoter of the arts. When Ruth received a substantial inheritance from her uncle in 1992, she and her husband Rod, established our 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Denver.
Ruth served as a docent at the Denver Art Museum, managed Tanner’s Indian Art Gallery in Applewood for 15 years, and volunteered and hosted artist receptions in her home throughout the 20 years of the Annual Rotary Club of Denver Artists of America events.
Under Ruth’s direction, the nonprofit organization went on to contribute to the Colorado Museum of Contemporary Art, the Denver Art Museum Hamilton Building and the Kirkland Museum among many other arts related projects locally and nationally.

a working artist.
I have expertise in business and non-profit development, strategic planning, account and project management, community engagement, marketing, sales, sponsorship, media strategy and planning. My industry experience includes healthcare, food, consumer packaged goods and retail.
My interests include anything outdoors (biking, race walking, hiking, skiing) hospitality, civics and arts and culture.
Over the last 30 years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with artists, museum curators, non-profits, editors, and designers.
I grew up painting, drawing, writing and illustrating my own stories, some of which won awards, and yet I somehow failed to see art as a career. I went to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo for a degree in business.

Go figure…after college, I happened into a job in a beautiful Denver gallery. The owner, Carol Siple, taught me everything about the art business, including how to shepherd artists through their careers. So, it all came together, my artistic bent and a business degree. I enjoy the challenge of solving problems that arise in the ever-changing art market and truly understand and love artists because, well, it’s part of my DNA.
My work as a curator and writer led me to where I am today, helping artists increase recognition and sales by analyzing the market, clarifying messaging, identifying obstacles, and finding transformative solutions.
I work with creative people who see life through a different lens. Their vision illuminates the world and everything shimmers just a little brighter when you’re around them.
