At the Colorado Women's Art Center & Museum, we're on a mission to elevate, encourage and exhibit Colorado Women Visual Artists.
Keep Life Interesting. That’s the motto Carrie MaKenna, Founder and President, inherited from her mother and three generations of Colorado artists and art collectors in her family.
The Colorado Women’s Art Museum (CWAM) was established from MaKenna’s lifetime of experience and as a Colorado art maker, a legacy leading to the creation of this Museum for the state’s talented women visual artists.
Historically and today, accomplished women artists have lacked adequate opportunities for exhibitions through traditional galleries and museums. We're on a mission to change that.
The love of art is literally in our blood. MaKenna’s mother Ruth Brunskill Greiner was an artist, art collector and dedicated promoter of the arts. When Ruth received a substantial inheritance from her uncle in 1992, she and her husband Rod, established our 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Denver.
Ruth served as a docent at the Denver Art Museum, managed Tanner’s Indian Art Gallery in Applewood for 15 years, and volunteered and hosted artist receptions in her home throughout the 20 years of the Annual Rotary Club of Denver Artists of America events.
Under Ruth’s direction, the nonprofit organization went on to contribute to the Colorado Museum of Contemporary Art, the Denver Art Museum Hamilton Building and the Kirkland Museum among many other arts related projects locally and nationally.

Lynn is a Denver abstract and nonobjective artist who has been painting in oils, acrylics, and mixed media for over 20 years. She is a graduate of the University of Colorado, and her fields of study have included mathematics, philosophy, and science which have inspired her love of space, geometry, and time, revealed in
many of her works.
She previously worked in the field of philanthropy for 12 years, as both a Program Officer for two foundations, and the Executive Director of a small national foundation. Other interests took her into educational research and working with many nonprofit organizations for over
30 years.
Art history is one of her passions, and too often little value is placed on women’s art in museums and in galleries, both locally and internationally. Being a board member for the Colorado Women’s Center and Art Museum is both an honor and an opportunity for her to help correct this oversight and change the misperception that women’s art is somehow less-than.
The Colorado Women's Art Museum is actively seeking additional Working Board Members.
Particularly in online research, website upkeep, CRM upkeep, and event production.

Painting is performance art for me. I work primarily in acrylic on canvas. Color and movement set the tone for the work. My work has evolved over the years. Originally, I placed the canvas on a table and added a coating of one or two colors: typically yellow and orange, or blue. Then sprayed, painted, dabbed, scraped, and dripped colors across the canvas. More recently I've added elements of color in broad strokes, lines, squares, circles, and rectangles. I build the layers gradually, balancing the entire work; adding color and shapes as needed to keep the piece balanced. A piece is done when it pops and the elements work together.
Other activities: improvisational actor and coach, guide at Plains Conservation Center, CO.

Don is a Senior Advisor for the Community Economic Defense Project in Denver. Don, with his wife Lynn, are also the founders of The Burnes Institute for Poverty Research at the Colorado Center on Law and Policy. Prior to that, he worked in education policy research and evaluation for the federal government and for a national educational policy organization. He is currently working on three new books related to
people who have been marginalized. He graduated from Exeter, received his BA from Princeton, his MAT from Washington University in St. Louis, and his PhD in education from
